Back3.1.9.4.(2)

ATTRIBUTION:

Most technical provisions of the BC Fire Code describe how the code’s objectives and functional statements are achieved. However, some provisions, like this one, do not relate directly to a code objective. The following analysis is provided to assist in understanding of the provision.

APPLICATION:

Combustible water distribution piping that has an outside diameter not more than 30 mm that penetrates a vertical fire separation that is required to have a fire-resistance rating, where the piping is sealed in conformance with Clause 3.1.9.1.(1)(b).
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A, and to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] as stated in Sentence 9.10.9.6.(7).

INTENT:

To exempt certain piping from the application of Sentence 3.1.9.2.(1) if certain conditions are met, on the basis that the piping is deemed to insignificantly contribute to the growth and spread of fire.
To override the options offered in Sentence 3.1.9.1.(1) and force the use of Clause 3.1.9.1.(1)(b) for certain piping exempted from the application of Sentence 3.1.9.2.(1).
