ATTRIBUTION:

Most technical provisions of the BC Fire Code describe how the code’s objectives and functional statements are achieved. However, some provisions, like this one, do not relate directly to a code objective. The following analysis is provided to assist in understanding of the provision.

 

APPLICATION:

Requirement for fire separation of a floor assembly, including a floor over a basement, that is entirely contained within a dwelling unit that has more than one storey and that is located within a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group C major occupancy. This applies in buildings whose building area is:
This applies to buildings to which Part 3 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 3].

INTENT:

To exempt a floor assembly, including a floor over a basement, which is entirely contained within a dwelling unit, from the requirement of Clause 3.2.2.43.(2)(a) that it be a fire separation.
