To notify persons, in a timely manner, of the need to take action in an emergency.

APPLICATION:

Installation of smoke detectors in:

sleeping rooms and corridors serving as part of a means of egress from sleeping rooms in portions of a building classified as Group B major occupancy,
rooms in a contained use area and corridors serving those rooms,
corridors in portions of a building classified as Group A, Division 1 major occupancy,
public corridors in portions of a building classified as Group C major occupancy,
exit stair shafts, and
the vicinity of draft stops required by Article 3.2.8.7.

This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A in which fire alarm systems are installed.

This also applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] in which fire alarm systems are installed, as stated in Sentence 9.10.18.6.(1).

INTENT:

To limit the probability that smoke will not be promptly detected in spaces where the presence of smoke or fire could be critically detrimental to the safety of persons, which could lead to persons not being notified of a fire situation in such spaces, which could lead to delays in evacuation or moving to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons.
