To retard the effects of fire on areas beyond its point of origin.
Objective:

APPLICATION:
Design, with respect to preventing the circulation
of smoke, of air handling systems, where the air handling system serves more
than one:
- storey,
- suite in a storey, or
- fire compartment required by Sentence 3.3.3.5.(2).
This applies to buildings described in Sentence
1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A in which fire alarm systems are
installed.
This also applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence
1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application
of Part 9] in which fire alarm systems are installed, as stated in Sentence
9.10.18.6.(1).
INTENT:
To limit the probability of the spread of smoke between
storeys, suites or fire compartments by means of an air handling system, which
could lead to harm to persons.
To limit the probability that smoke originating from a fire
in an air handling system will spread through the duct system, which could
lead to harm to persons.
