Back3.4.2.1.(5)

ATTRIBUTION:

Most technical provisions of the BC Fire Code describe how the code’s objectives and functional statements are achieved. However, some provisions, like this one, do not relate directly to a code objective. The following analysis is provided to assist in understanding of the provision.

APPLICATION:

Exits from rooftop enclosures that are provided with access to exits in conformance with Sentences 3.3.1.3.(5) and (6).
This applies to exit facilities serving floor areas that are intended for occupancy, including mezzanines as stated in Sentence 3.3.1.3.(5), in buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
This also applies to tents and air-supported structures, as stated in Sentences 3.1.6.1.(1) and 9.10.1.2.(1).

INTENT:

To exclude rooftop enclosures from the application of Sentence 3.4.2.1.(1), which would otherwise require direct access to exits at the roof level, on the basis that:
  • the rooftop enclosures will have a limited number of occupants who will occupy the space for limited periods for the purpose of servicing and maintaining equipment within the enclosure, and
  • the means of egress from the rooftop complies with Sentences 3.3.1.3.(5) and (6).
To direct Code users to Sentences 3.3.1.3.(5) and (6).
