APPLICATION:

Service spaces referred to in Sentence 3.2.1.1.(8) opening directly into exits [service spaces in which facilities are included to permit a person to enter and to undertake maintenance and other operations pertaining to building services].
This applies to exits serving floor areas that are intended for occupancy, including mezzanines as stated in Sentence 3.4.2.2.(1), in buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
This also applies to tents and air-supported structures, as stated in Sentences 3.1.6.1.(1) and 9.10.1.2.(1).

INTENT:

To limit the probability that a fire involving service spaces will spread to the exit, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons.
To limit the probability that a fire involving service spaces will spread to the exit, which could lead to emergency responders being delayed in gaining access to exits, which could lead to delays or ineffectiveness in fire emergency response operations, which could lead to:
  • delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons, including emergency responders, and
  • the spread of fire to other parts of the building, which could lead to harm to persons.
