APPLICATION:
Termination of handrails on stairways.
This applies, in buildings described in Sentence
1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A, to:
- interior and exterior exits, as stated in Appendix Note ., and
- exits serving floor areas that are intended for occupancy, including mezzanines as stated in Sentence 3.4.2.2.(1).
This also applies to:
- ramps, stairways and passageways used by the public as access to exits, as stated in Appendix Note .,
- tents and air-supported structures, as stated in Sentences 3.1.6.1.(1) and 9.10.1.2.(1),
- stairs in a means of egress from a roof, where a roof is used or intended for an occupant load of more than 60, as stated in Sentence 3.3.1.3.(4),
- ramps and stairways, as stated in Sentence 3.3.1.14.(1), and
- ramps in a barrier-free path of travel, as stated in Clause 3.8.3.4.(1)(e).
INTENT:
To limit the probability that handrail terminations will
protrude into pathways or otherwise create a hazard, which could lead to collisions,
which could lead to harm to persons.
To limit the probability that handrail terminations will
protrude into pathways or otherwise create a hazard, which could lead to delays
in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead
to harm to persons.
