Back3.2.4.18.(9)

ATTRIBUTION:

Functional Statement:

F11

To notify persons, in a timely manner, of the need to take action in an emergency.

F81

To minimize the risk of malfunction, interference, damage, tampering, lack of use or misuse.

Objective:

OS1.5

APPLICATION:

Silencing and restoration of audible signal devices [forming part of a fire alarm system] located within dwelling units, in buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) in which fire alarm systems are installed.
This also applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] in which fire alarm systems are installed, as stated in Sentence 9.10.18.6.(1).

INTENT:

To supersede the requirements of Sentence 3.2.4.6.(2) and permit manual silencing switches outside the fire alarm control unit, where silenced audible signal devices automatically restore to normal operation after 10 min.
This is to limit the probability that audible signal devices will:
  • be inadvertently or purposely silenced [made inoperative or damaged] as a result of false alarms, and
  • not be restored to normal operation after being silenced.
This is to limit the probability of the signal devices not operating in a fire situation, which could lead to persons not being promptly notified, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons.
