Most technical provisions of the BC Fire Code describe how the code’s objectives and functional statements are achieved. However, some provisions, like this one, do not relate directly to a code objective. The following analysis is provided to assist in understanding of the provision.



Access to exits conforming to Sentences to (4) for dwelling units.
This applies to floor areas that are intended for occupancy, including mezzanines as stated in Sentence, in buildings described in Sentence of Division A.

To exempt access to exits for dwelling units from the requirements of Sentence or (2), which would otherwise require two exits or one exit, provided some conditions are met, on the basis that:
  • occupants are familiar with their egress routes, and
  • the dwelling unit design will be constrained in accordance with Sentences to (4), thus limiting the number of occupants.
