ATTRIBUTION:

Most technical provisions of the BC Fire Code describe how the code’s objectives and functional statements are achieved. However, some provisions, like this one, do not relate directly to a code objective. The following analysis is provided to assist in understanding of the provision.

 

APPLICATION:

Sliding glass partitions, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], that separate public corridors from adjacent occupancies and that are open during normal working hours.

INTENT:

To exempt sliding glass partitions that separate public corridors from adjacent occupancies and that are normally open and out of the way during working hours, and therefore do not present a danger to persons, from the application of Sentences 9.6.6.2.(3), 9.6.6.4.(1) and 9.7.5.1.(1).

To minimize the risk of injury to persons as a result of tripping, slipping, falling, contact, drowning or collision.

To facilitate the timely movement of persons to a safe place in an emergency.

APPLICATION:

In circumstances where the additional expense of a railing or guard is not warranted, to limit the probability that persons will not be able to see the transparent panel and will collide with it, which could lead to falls, which could lead to harm to persons.
In circumstances where the additional expense of a railing or guard is not warranted, to limit the probability that, in an emergency, persons will not be able to see a transparent panel and will collide with it, which could lead to falls, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons.
