Most technical provisions of the BC Fire Code describe how the code’s objectives and functional statements are achieved. However, some provisions, like this one, do not relate directly to a code objective. The following analysis is provided to assist in understanding of the provision.

Reduction of the uniformly distributed live loads specified in Table for the design of structural members supporting a tributary area of floor, roof or combination thereof that is greater than 20 m2.
This applies to buildings described in Sentence of Division A and to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence of Division A for application of Part 9] that are required to be designed in accordance with the requirements of Part 4.

To supersede the application of Sentence and allow a reduction in the uniformly distributed live load specified in Table, taking into account the maximum expected accumulation of weight due to persons and objects on the tributary area supported by the structural elements.
