APPLICATION:

Design of piles, drilled piers, and caissons when the design moment in the element due to earthquake effects is greater than 75% of its moment capacity, at sites where IEFaSa(0.2) is greater than 0.75.
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A and to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] that are required to be designed in accordance with the requirements of Part 4.

INTENT:

To limit the probability that the deep foundation elements will not be able to accommodate cyclic inelastic behaviour, which could lead to structural failure, which could lead to harm to persons.

This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A and to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] that are required to be designed in accordance with the requirements of Part 4.

To limit the probability that the spread footings will spread apart due to the maximum expected seismic forces, which could lead to structural failure, which could lead to harm to persons.
