APPLICATION:

Design of non-structural and structural components of the building with respect to their interaction during earthquake.
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A and to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] that are required to be designed in accordance with the requirements of Part 4.

INTENT:

To limit the probability that the interaction of non-structural and structural components of the building due to the maximum expected seismic deformations of the structure will lead to:
  • structural failure, or
  • severe damage to non-structural elements, which could lead to their subsequently falling.
This is to limit the probability of harm to persons.
To direct Code users to Sentence 4.1.8.3.(6) for requirements related to stiff elements not considered part of the Seismic Force Resisting System.
