APPLICATION:

Ceiling height of 2.1 m, in residential buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], in:
  • bathrooms, water-closet rooms, and above-grade laundry areas, and
  • passages, halls, main entrance vestibules and habitable rooms and spaces not specifically mentioned in Article 9.5.3.1.
This also applies to a ceiling height of 2.1 m [in lieu of 2.3 m], in residential buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], in:
  • living rooms or spaces, dining rooms or spaces, kitchens or kitchen spaces, and
  • master bedrooms or bedroom spaces, other bedrooms or sleeping spaces.
This also applies to a clear height of 2.0 m in unfinished basements, including any laundry area therein, of residential buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9]:
  • under beams, and
  • in locations normally used to get to laundry and storage areas.
This also applies to spaces above or below mezzanines in residential occupancies.
This also applies to dwelling units in buildings to which Part 3 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 3], as stated in Sentence 3.7.1.1.(2).

INTENT:

To limit the probability that an inadequate ceiling height of rooms or spaces [i.e. less than 2.1 m high] will lead to collision with protrusions from ceilings, such as lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and low door heads, which could lead to harm to persons.
To limit the probability that an inadequate clear height of rooms or spaces [i.e. less than 2.0 m high] will lead to collision with protrusions from ceilings, such as lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and low door heads, in areas used infrequently or for a limited time, and where occupants are familiar with the space, which could lead to harm to persons.
To limit the probability that an inadequate ceiling height of rooms or spaces [i.e. less than 2.1 m high] will lead to collision with protrusions from ceilings, such as lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and low door heads in an emergency, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons.
To limit the probability that an inadequate clear height of rooms or spaces [i.e. less than 2.0 m high] will lead to collision with protrusions from ceilings, such as lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and low door heads in an emergency, in areas used infrequently or for a limited time, and where occupants are familiar with the space, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons.
