To minimize the risk of injury to persons as a result of tripping, slipping, falling, contact, drowning or collision.

APPLICATION:
Width and length of interior and exterior landings
for stairs or ramps, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence
1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of
Part 9].
This also applies to stairs or ramps within dwelling units in buildings to which Part 3 applies [see Sentence
1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application
of Part 3], as stated in Sentence
3.3.4.7.(1).
INTENT:
To limit the probability of landings of insufficient dimensions
to allow users to access the landing, pause, pass other users, or turn without
an awkward change in gait, which could lead to:
- persons falling, or
- persons falling in an emergency, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place.
This is to limit the probability of harm to
persons.
To limit the required length of landings, where longer landings
would not significantly reduce the risk of injury, and where:
- users are likely to be familiar with the stair or ramp, or
- the risk of being knocked over by other users is unlikely.
This is to limit the probability of landings
of insufficient dimensions to allow access, pausing, passing other users,
or turning without an awkward change in gait, which could lead to:
- persons falling, or
- persons falling in an emergency, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place.
This is to limit the probability of harm to persons.
