PARENTAL TRANSPARENCY AND
AGE-APPROPRIATE EDUCATION ACT

This Bill establishes the Committee for Parental Transparency and Age-Appropriateness in Education.

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

Definitions

1 In this Act:

"committee" means the Committee for Parental Transparency and Age-Appropriateness in Education;

"material" means any book, film, pamphlet, document, digital or otherwise, that is hosted within a public school in British Columbia;

"public school" means a school in British Columbia that receives more than 50% of its funding from the Ministry of Education.

Establishment of committee

2 Within six months of Royal Assent the Minister of Education is required to establish the committee.

Composition of committee

3 The committee is to consist of:

(a) 19 members as recommended by the Select Standing Committee on Education;

(b) the Minister of Education;

(c) a member designated by the Leader of the Official Opposition.

Provision of list

4 The Select Standing Committee on Education is required to provide a list of 38 people to the Minister of Education to select as members of the committee by January 31 of each year.

Term

5 Selection to the committee is for a six-month period.

Mandate of committee

6 The mandate of the committee is the following:

(a) Review materials sent to the committee by individuals;

(b) Review materials as designated by the chair of the committee;

(c) Review materials as suggested by Members of the Legislative Assembly.

Review of materials

7 Upon review of materials the committee is required to suggest:

(a) an age range for the material;

(b) whether the material should be hosted within a public school.

Volunteers

8 Membership on the committee is volunteer based and members of the committee are not entitled to any additional compensation, remuneration, per diems, travel costs, or any other monies for their participation.
