SHORT-TERM RENTAL ACCOMMODATIONS
AMENDMENT ACT (No. 2), 2025

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

CLAUSE 1: [Short-Term Rental Accommodations Act, section 36.1] enables a local government to issue temporary permits for the provision of short-term rental accommodations in certain circumstances.

1 The following section is added to the Short-Term Rental Accommodations Act, S.B.C. 2023, c. 32:

Temporary permits

36.1 (1) In this section:

"major event" means an arts, culture, sport, academic, political or industry event that is expected to attract a significant number of attendees requiring accommodation;

"period of a major event" means the period during which a major event is to take place together with the three days before and the three days after this period.

(2) Subject to subsection (7), if a major event is to take place within the area of authority of a local government, the local government may, upon application, issue a temporary permit to a person that would allow the person to provide short-term rental accommodations at a property in the area of authority during the period of the major event in accordance with the provisions of the permit and any bylaws made under subsection (4).

(3) The permit referred to in subsection (2) is to be in effect for the period specified in the permit.

(4) A local government may make bylaws respecting permits referred to in subsection (2).

(5) To the extent of any conflict between the provisions of a bylaw made under subsection (4) and the provisions of this Act, the provisions of the bylaw prevail.

(6) To the extent of any conflict between the provisions of a permit referred to in subsection (2) and the provisions of this Act, the provisions of the permit prevail.

(7) A local government may not issue a permit under subsection (2) in respect of any particular short-term rental accommodations for a total of more than 45 days in any calendar year.

Commencement

2 This Act comes into force on the date of Royal Assent.
