Provisions in force November 29, 2027

Effective November 29, 2027, the following provisions of the Health Care and Professionals Regulation, B.C. Reg. 131/2025 are in force:

(i) section 1, as it enacts the definitions of "psychotherapist" and "psychotherapy".

(ii) sections 2 (i) and 4 (c) and Part 10.

Definitions

1   In this regulation:

"psychotherapist" means a licensee who is authorized to practise psychotherapy;

"psychotherapy" means the health profession in which a person provides the types of health services referred to in section 58 [scope of practice for psychotherapy].

Designation of health professions

2   Each of the following continues to be designated as a designated health profession for the purposes of the Act:

(i) psychotherapy.

Health profession corporations

4   A corporation that does not hold a health profession corporation permit must not carry on the business of providing health services to the public, if the health services are provided by licensees who practise any of the following designated health professions:

(c) psychotherapy.

Part 10 — Practice of Psychotherapy

Exclusive titles

57   Except as permitted under the Act, only a psychotherapist may use the title "psychotherapist".

Scope of practice for psychotherapy

58   (1) The following types of health services, provided primarily for the purposes set out in subsection (2), constitute the scope of practice for psychotherapy:

(a) assessing the mental health status of patients for the purpose of providing the health services referred to in paragraph (b);

(b) using psychosocial interventions, with a focus on communication-based therapies,

(i) to manage mental health, and

(ii) to treat mental disorders and conditions that have been diagnosed by a licensee or extrajurisdictional practitioner who is authorized to diagnose mental disorders and conditions;

(c) advising on mental health.

(2) The primary purposes for providing health services in the practice of psychotherapy are to promote, maintain and restore mental health.
