Premier's Advisory Council for Persons with Disabilities Act

[RSBC 1996] CHAPTER 371

 Definitions

1  In this Act:

"council" means the council continued under section 2;

"disability" means the loss of functional ability or a reduction in the abilities of a person due to physical or mental impairment.

 Council continued

2  (1)  The Premier's Advisory Council for Persons with Disabilities is continued.

(2)  The council, to be appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, consists of a chair and not more than 12 other members who are persons with disabilities or persons representing persons with disabilities.

 Mandate of council

3  The council may do any or all of the following:

(a) review, advise on and make recommendations with respect to government programs and policies with a view to improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities;

(b) bring before the Premier, the government and the public, matters of interest and concern to persons with disabilities;

(c) without limiting paragraphs (a) and (b), promote

(i)  the achievement of equitable access to services for persons with disabilities,

(ii)  greater understanding of the services required by and available to persons with disabilities,

(iii)  public education and awareness of the capabilities of persons with disabilities,

(iv)  prevention of disabilities,

(v)  education and training for persons with disabilities,

(vi)  employment for persons with disabilities, and

(vii)  the independence and self responsibility of persons with disabilities.

 Reports to Premier

4  The council must report its findings and recommendations to the Premier as and when advisable, but in any event not less than once in each calendar year.

 Power to make regulations

5  The Lieutenant Governor in Council may make regulations referred to in section 41 of the Interpretation Act.
