On the recommendation of the undersigned, the Lieutenant Governor, by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council, orders that the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations, B.C. Reg. 26/58, is amended as set out in the attached Schedule.

Schedule

1 Section 23.01 of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations, B.C. Reg. 26/58, is amended by repealing the definition of "authority" and substituting the following:

"authority" means the following:

(a) the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure;

(b) the council of a municipality;

(c) the governing body of a treaty first nation;

(d) a Nisga’a Government;

(e) a person duly authorized by a person or body referred to in paragraphs (a) to (d); .

2 The following section is added:

First Nations language on stop sign

23.13 (1) In this section, "First Nations authority" means the following:

(a) the governing body of a treaty first nation;

(b) a Nisga’a Government;

(c) a person duly authorized by a body referred to in paragraph (a) or (b) to exercise authority in relation to this section.

(2) If a First Nations authority erects a Stop (Regulatory) sign as set out in Schedule 1, the First Nations authority may, despite section 23.02,

(a) add the word "STOP" in a First Nations language, or

(b) replace the word "STOP" in the English language with the word "STOP" in a First Nations language.
